Copying this post from kmik here because it shows what law enforcement were dealing with during this investigation. It also shows they followed up on leads, rumors, and street talk as they came through.

I would just like to give a little run down (and not in the order it was reported) to show how it is entirely possible that the police had no real clue of what direction to go with this investigation.
They were called to Cabin 28 with 3 people murdered, 3 kids surviving, and a family member who was sleeping over next door.
Where was Tina and was she alive when she left 28?
Don D told the police on the scene that Sheila had just had a baby and Richard was the father and where to find him.
Dana and Johnny were known to steal, had been hitch hiking home 4-11-81, and Dana was living in a group home.
Johnny had ran away from home the month before.
Sue's boyfriend Dareyl drove in from Paradise and asked police what had happened at Sue's. He immediately tells them he has to go check on his gun.
Tina had accused a man, who had recently been released from jail, of molesting her and a friend.
Phillip, cousin to the Meeks, was out panhandling 4-12-81 around noon, giving out info on the crimes.
Donna was claiming to have given the boys a ride home.
Phillip was claiming to have been picked up by Marty, 2 unknowns, Johnny and Dana, and taken to 28 where he says he saw some of the murder.
The police questioned Keddie residence and took down all license plate numbers.
Police were hearing rumors of parties on 4-11-81.
Police made a plea to the youth in the newspaper and even going to the school for any info they may have had.
Marilyn told of Marty and Bo's behavior.
Maggie reported Chuck having cuts on his hands.
Chuck told of "Steve" walking by 28 on 4-11-81 high on acid- he said this was Steve L- but Steve said he was gone for Easter vacation that weekend.
Chuck also told he and Henry were in Keddie around 3:30-4:00 on 4-12-81.
Chuck and Henry gave their statements that did not match.
David G. was having some funny feelings and ask to drive the police around Keddie and Quincy to tell them what he "feels" has happened.
Someone reported that Karl S was park by the Keddie Bridge around 11:30 on 4-11-81.
Karl S gave his ever changing stories.
All the while MANY people were calling in with who they thought was acting weird or favored the composites.
Tom C. gave a lenthy story of 2 men he had seen in several different locations acting weird, and even asked to be hypnotized.
Justin was being hypnotized.
The Meeks reported Marty for standing across the street from their house and harassing them.
The boys are said to have been at a party in E Quincy where 2 weird looking men from Oroville were.
S. Durham - Smith said he gave the boys a ride to Ganser Park
MANY people see the boys at or near the Exxon station 4-11-81 except the guy who worked at the Exxon station that night.
Donna had to be admitted to the hospital and feared she was going to be in trouble for what she knew - the police go to hospital to guard her room or hear her story?? Who knows.
Some girls claimed they heard from K. Shanks that Tina was pregnant by Marty - but they deny telling the story.
Marty supposedly confessed to a Reno therapist of his involvement in killing Sue and Tina.
Henry confessed to a friend that he was present when the killings started out as a game. He later told the police he was kidding and just tired of being called the Keddie Machete.
Tina's body is found 3 years later at Feather Falls.
Serial killer from Oroville W. Weaver's wife reports him at some point and W. Weaver's son had a gun with a missing site.
S Howard (who was a suspect in his sister's murder) is reported by a family friend about 3 years after the murders of acting strange on the morning of 4-12-81, coming to her house in Quincy asking to use her car.
3 years later he gets upset after an airing of the Keddie murders.
And to think this is just a very "brief" rundown from the very few reports and statements we have.
I didn't even bother to list the girls/women who had been seeing Dana, the people who claimed to have seen the boys, that P. Seabolt said D. Josephson was with Sue in Keddie on 4-11-81, or of all the people all over Keddie on the night of 4-11-81, plus things that Tina's teacher Lipsy told, and I could go on and on and on.
I can't even imagine how the police had time to start looking in one direction before changing to go in another.
Funny how so many had so much to say back then - yet today, 35 years later, no one wants to talk.

The lack of bloody shoe prints all over that house is amazing to me. How was the killer(s) able to kill them and stage the bodies without tracking blood all over? We know there was blood splatter and bloody smears where things were touched but no tracks around the bodies or house?
There are no pictures of J. Sharp on any of the forums that I know of.
That was something very important I left out of the above post - J. Sharp had to be looked at and eliminated also - and I believe he was. Here is something interesting from the request by PCSO to follow J Sharp:
Also, we would like to know if he had leave or other time off anytime within two months prior to the homicides as we have recently learned that a man was at the Sharp residence in Keddie about three to five weeks prior to April 11th and he reportedly had a fight with Glenna.
So the police were also chasing down the guy that F Davis said Sue was fighting with a few weeks before the murders, on a Friday night, around 10:00p.m., in Sue's yard, with all the traffic to and from the bar, yet no one else mentions it (there is also a report on Mr. Seabolt being questioned as to if he has seen a man matching that description).
So here is more we can add to above post.
The police had to eliminated J Sharp - Sue's husband (the father of her children)who lived in Connecticut.
The police were trying to find out the identity of the man (as described by F. Davis) who supposedly had a fight with Sue a few weeks before the murders.
The police had to question Sue's ex, J. Baze, on his whereabouts (plus Johnny and Dana were at his house on the afternoon of 4-11-81).
And let's not forget the devil worshipping theory the police had to look at
Nobody sums up this case not being solved any better than a deleted scene from the documentary of the lady who was working as a PCSO radio dispatcher on 4-12-81 when the call came in about the murders.
