Ok linear thinkers, help me out with this one lol. French was arrested the previous year for molesting Tina, the charges were dropped. What was he released for prior to the murders? I thought he was convicted of molesting a child a few years after the murders? Do we know the day he was released? And I'll be pretty upset if the owner of the sky lodge wasn't asked for a description or looked at photos

I do not know the answer to your question, Snoho, but hopefully someone else does. When was he released from prison? In regards to molesting a child a few years prior to the murders, do you think that was the similar case # mentioned in Leiber's report from the incident with Tina & her friend? That "similar case" was sometime in 1979.
Here are some interesting things I found regarding Daniel French.
- He grew up in Chico, California (Butte County) & his family still lived there in 1981.
- His dad & other family members worked for Diamond Match Company, a sawmill and later a sawmill & match factory.
- This is interesting because of the correlation to & history of the Feather River Pine Mill. Tina's remains were found at Camp 18, a remote tract of land owned & used by the Feather River Pine Mill when they were still in operation. Feather River Pine was originally Hutchinson Lumber which was located in Oroville, CA. The original sawmill & lumber operations burned down in 1927.
Following the fire, Diamond Match Co., located in Chico, offered employment to the dislocated workers of the Hutchinson Lumber Co. After a number of setbacks & under new owners, the Hutchinson Mill was reopened and moved to Feather Falls under the new company name of The Feather River Pine Mill in 1940. A FRB article stated the new lumber mill would rehire many of the workers from the former Hutchinson Sawmill. Dareyl Josephson's father also worked at Diamond Match Co.
If nothing else, it shows a familiarity of these logging companies & surrounding areas. It has been said people from Quincy were not familiar with the back logging roads connected to Feather Falls, that would have to be someone from the Oroville area.
- According to a 1945 news article, Daniel Worman French was sent to Beale Camp for "re-examination & induction into the army. www.newspapers.com/image/679629572/?terms=Daniel%20French&match=1
Beale Camp is an air force base located in Yuba County, smack dab in the middle of all these questionable areas associated with the Keddie case (the locations Tina, Kathy Howard, and Bonnie Newman were discovered).
Snoho, I agree with this statement:
I agree with the assessment that older assailants prefer killing methods that don't get blood on themselves (of course thats not always the case.)
I do believe someone younger, or several younger people committed these murders. However, there is good reason to consider Daniel French. The info related to him just sort of stopped. It's likely PCSO proceeded in comparing his prints to fingerprints found in the cabin, but such reports have never been made public for us to know for sure. Until then, I'd say he is worth digging into.

From memory I think he had been living in Anderson (?) California before moving to Quincy. He had a wife and a daughter and he and his wife filed for divorce in Plumas County in 1977 and I could not find it in the FRB but I thought he delivered newspapers. He was living in the Downtown Trailer Park (where all that Kathy gossip got started).
Maybe the case # referenced on Tina's molestation report had something to do with what Tina told in her interview?
Now that makes little sense to me and if read in full it still makes little sense but it seems she was trying to tell them of something he had already done to another girl. Maybe they didn't question her more about this because they already knew what she was talking about.
It seems he left Anderson (why?) and moved to Quincy, then got accused of molesting in 1980 and moved to the Maple Leaf bar in Belden where he was seen in March 1981, then he moved to Hilltop Ranch 4-10-81 the day before the murders happened (whew that was close), then he again moved from there September 1981. He was a great suspect

She, he forced a girl to blow her brains out, he almost did

Kmik, I was wondering the same about that statement Tina made. What the heck was that about? I also thought, perhaps Helen didn't question it more because PCSO already knew what Tina was referring to? Quite a crazy statement.
Thanks for the info on him, I didn't realize he had been married and had a child. I did see a FRB article where he was looking for someone to deliver newspapers. A help wanted ad I suppose.

Helen: Oh, there were two days? Well, how about the second day? What happened on the second day?
Tina: We went over there and then when we got there, he said, we were at our house and then he came over there and told us to get out of the house, no not that part, the part her mother opens....he wanted to talk to her mom, but he didn't, she, he did, he told her that can he go to the Valley out there so he can use his money there and then she said no, cuz she had to go to her grandma's and have a party there, but she was, because she didn't want, because she knew what he would do. He would strip her. She, he forced her, a girl to blow her brains out, he almost did.
Helen: Is that right?
Tina: Yes
