At the crime scene, a broken site adjuster ramp and a single .177 pellet were found from a Daisy 880air rifle. The pellet gun however, has never been found. One speculation (and I believe the cops considered this) was that somebody with military or other combat training could be involved. After reading, re-reading, studying diagrams, and discussions; I went looking for how certain wounds could be inflicted by gun butts and found this video. The victims had some triangle shaped depressions, which would line up, and at least two had wounds to their ears, Johns nearly being severed.

The US military taught "Butt stroking" (settle down class) techniques at least until 1984. I could only find 2 images; the first being a "pistol whip" injury and the second an actual rifle stock injury. They both present with an eerie similarity to the autopsy diagrams.

fractures may be present (Figure 9.4). The butt of a rifle may also be used to beat a victim. Figure 9.5 shows an individual, who after being shot, had his jaw broken with the butt of a .22 rimfire rifle.

I'm going to drop this here before I forget again. I was looking through some old notes, and guess I'd been wondering about somebody in ROTC. A kid in ROTC would have trained with a rifle at the time, even a decade or two later. That would tie in a couple of things, the wounds and some of the more "inexperienced or juvenile" aspects of the crime scene. I'm really not betting on it. IIRC I didn't jot this down because I came up with the idea the crime scene "looked like someone in ROTC" but because I saw a POI who had been in ROTC. Lol, and guess what I didn't write down?! I do know where I found the name, I'm leaving here as yet another note to self, reminder to get back to.
