Just for posterity. I remembered i took this video from my dashcam to dispel speculation that the boys walked home without being seen. It's just a boring drive from Exxon to the Keddie turnoff.
The road was even narrower in '81, it had fewer turnouts and didn't have the passing lanes over the hill. In fact in many places if a car was oncoming the kids would've had to move into the weeds to avoid being hit, elsewise, for the majority of the route, they're right there in the headlight beams. There's nowhere to walk off road for any significant distance. Traffic might have been light but no way two boys hiked that distance and nobody noted this.

Dang, that is the quite a hike. And a death wish, especially in the dark of night.
Thanks for uploading this, it was also helpful to see where some of the places we read about where in relation to each other.

Nicely done video. I especially liked the added text to show the FRC turnoff. That would have been quite a hike for two boys in the dark.
JoeMcPlumber - what was the posted speed limit for that road in 1981? And what was the speed locals drove that road?

lol "speed limit"?
When i first got to Plumas both Hwys 70 and 89 had dotted lines down the middle, almost the whole length of them. I thought maybe it was an inside joke at CALDOT, like "sure you can pass, and maybe you'll get get away with it too".
