Steve D and his ever changing story. Why couldn't he keep his story straight about his whereabouts Saturday? It feels like a lot these kids were holding back and possibly fearful. Who can blame them? People don't just lie because they are "liars" or because they're "crazy" & trying to insert themselves into the investigation. A lot of people & statements have been dismissed online with nothing more than these claims. Let's try to untangle this.
Part 1: Steve's interviews, April 22 - 28, 1981
Part 2: Steve's PON & Timeline Entries
*DURHAM, STEVE (STEWART)
Martin Smartt sells hash, gave conflicting stories, final story he, John & Dana rode around @ 2000 - 2145 & he dropped them off at Exxon
<LEONARD>
810000-0000b Steve D. states that he "smoked hash" from POI on two occasions. POI would also front hash to people he trusted and POI makes hash. Steve D. has seen as much as a pound of hash in POI's house. (prior to April 11)
810411-2130b Johnny and Dana are picked up at the Exxon by Steve D. and are driven to the park near the airport looking for a party. Dana appeared to be drunk and told Steve he had been drinking something other than beer. Johnny, Dana and Steve drove through the park but did not see any parties. Steve stated he saw a brown car with two males, ages 21-30 years, with short to average length hair, parked in the park. Steve then dropped Johnny and Dana off. Approximate time: 9:30-9:45 pm.
810411-2200a Richard M. goes to the arcade in Quincy and meets Angus L., Steve D., and Mike H.
810411-2200a Steve D. arrives at the arcade and tells Richard M. he had just given Dana and Johnny a ride to the park and then back to the Exxon.
810411-0000b Clyde (?) S. related that he had a party at his residence on Lee Road. S. states that Steve D. was at his party. S. does not believe that Frank A. was attended the party. <Leonard>

Part 3: Others on Steve
1981-?? Sara J.
What was removed from this interview? Did she verify or discredit Steve's story of being with her Saturday night? According to the DOJ agents, she had left for San Diego 3-4 days before the homicides.
Clyde's interviews have not been released. At least one full interview does exist + misc PON & Timeline entries.
1981-?? Clyde S:
Clyde (?) S. related that he had a party at his residence on Lee Road. S. states that Steve D. was at his party. S. does not believe that Frank A. was attended the party. <Leonard>
810412-??z Donna Williams calls Pat Dorris about the murders in Keddie, saying Sheila Sharp had
told Donna about them. Shortly after the murders, Clyde Smith went downtown and found out there
had been an acid party on Saturday night 4-11-81 in Meadow Valley. He was unable to find out where.

5-13-81: I contacted a citizen who will remain anonymous for reasons of his own personal safety as he is familiar with people in this county who are or have been dealing and using heavy drugs, mainly LSD and blotter acid. I asked him about any acid parties in Keddie or Meadow Valley and he said he had heard rumors about a party at Keddie five doors south of the store but no confirmation. Citizen told me that if a party had taken place in Meadow Valley, it would probably be at Roger's residence. Citizen told me that Bill was into acid and that a woman by the name of Pam who lives at Las Plumas Trailer COurt was in possession of three hits of blotter acid the week after the murders. This citizen is going to try to find out where the stuff is coming from and who has it. He thinks that only a very few people are involved with anything harder than coke or weed.
Frank A's interview has not been released either. His PON entry, although an interesting separate topic, does not include anything in regards to Steve D.
A little confusing, in Steve's final interview, he states he was with Frank A & there is a notation stating Frank verified this. However, in Clyde's statements he claims Steve was at a party at his house (which is not mentioned in Steve's account) but Clyde does not remember Frank being there.
AMES, FRANK JR
Three male subjects walking Hwy 70 across from his house

Richard's interview matches up with Steve's initial statement of driving around with J&D and dropping them off at the Exxon. Then then hung out at the Exxon until 2am until going their separate ways. No mention of Frank A being there or Steve going to the Meeks to hang out with Charlie.
One thing that did stay consistent throughout Steve's statements is Dana appeared drunk on Saturday night.
1981-06-03 Richard M:
Charlie M. did not mention Steve in his 1981-05-22 interview:
Part 4: Clarification to this old PON entry -
*DURHAM, STEVE (STEWART)

According to Sara's interview, Steve was confusing Marty with Carl K.
Part 5: What did Steve say to Donna? Why did she think the FBI was going to arrest her?
by jhancock » Sun Nov 21, 2010 12:39 pm
Most of us remember a user on another board insisting that he drove Johnny and Dana to Keddie on the night of the murders. Whether he did not not remains unclear, but we do know that he never went to the police with his story. Two others did, however, with their own version of events that night. Here they are, for the first time:
The date of the first report is 5-5-81. At the top reads
"Memorandum, County of Plumas."
Ken--
As I advised you when I called you, Donna W. was extremely paranoid and was saying that "they" got Dana and would get her. I was unable to learn any more at the hospital. I was relieved by Wayne W. and I advised him of what I had heard. Later I got a call to the Dorris Foster Home and Pat D. told me the following.
Pat was called by Donna earlier in the evening. At that time Pat took Donna to the foster home. Donna was drunk but not paranoid as when I saw her. Donna told Pat the following. She said that she was the one who gave Dana and John a ride to Keddie. She picked them up about 10:30 pm in front of Exxon. She saw Mrs. Sharp when she got there and said she was dressed like she was ready to go out. She also said she knew who else was at the house. There was also some mention of Steve D. but Pat could not remember what.
[the report briefly mentions Donna's then living arrangement and ends there]
1981-05-07
Dorris, Pat was interviewed on 5-7-81 by SA Crim. Pat said on 5-5-81 she picked up Donna Williams, who was very drunk. Donna said the FBI was going to arrest her for murder. Donna was very emotional. She said she had given Dana and Johnny a ride to Exxon early and then gave them a ride to Keddie at 10:30 pm. Pat said she is unable to tell whether [Donna] was hallucinating or what.
Donna talked about Steve Durham and said she didn't think he would lie to her. Pat told her Steve would lie, in her opinion. Donna would not talk any more about Steve.
Pat feels like Donna has guilty feelings because she and the others didn't give Dana and Johnny a ride to Keddie. Donna has an alcoholic problem and probably is a drug user. Donna fights a lot when she gets to drinking. She suspects Donna would know the drug dealer.
When Donna talked about picking up Johnny and Dana and taking them to Keddie, she said there were three kids. She never could figure out whether Donna took them to Keddie or not.
Donna is the person who called her on Sunday, 4-12-81, and told her about the murders. Sheila Sharp told Donna about them.
Shortly after the murders Clyde S, went downtown and found out there had been an acid party on Saturday night 4-11-81 in Meadow Valley. He was unable to find out where.
Part 6: Was he the "Steve" mentioned in these interviews?
1981-04-30 Marian B:
1981-04-30 Jan S:
1981-04-30 Wade M:
There's enough similarities but also a couple of hold ups. First being, would Steve have been able to take college classes while still being in high school? We've heard of similar programs between the HS and FRC.
And the biggest, wouldn't Wade have recognized Steve D since he was friends with at least Richard & Charlie?? Wouldn't he have seen these two black eyes for himself most likely?
Mystery Steve & his friend showed up to Jan & Mary's in a light colored van (lots of unknown vans in this case), but we only know of Steve driving a pinto.
Now I'm wondering what happened to this Steve after he showed up with two black eyes? Did he continue to attend classes or quit showing up? Like the two other Steve's in this case who both left the area shortly after the homicides.
Why exactly did McKim carry a guitar with him everywhere?
