From the Doug Thomas files, on or before 5/22/81
"I then interviewed Dee Jay L, ***** of Quincy who lives on ***** Rd. Dee says he first met Cooney during this semester, as both are vets, and Cooney enrolled in a Geology class but dropped out a short time later. He heard that Cooney had gotten a carpentry job in the bay area within the last couple of weeks. Cooneys wife had visited Dee’s home once, and Cooney had dropped him off once at his home in I.F.’s. Cooney drives an old 64-65 Beige Plymouth with the rear end crunched in. It is a 4 dr. model."
This peeked my interest. I've heard a few rumors about the "guy who suddenly left after the murders, who wouldn't leave a forwarding address". The police were interested in him because his car was seen "at the Sharp residence" that Thursday before the murders. When questioned, Cooney stated that he was out of town that day, and his wife had his car. His wife confirmed and said she had dropped Dee Jay off at the Smartts that day. Most things about this story seem to line up, but where is Dee Jays corroboration ?
And the reportee said they saw the car at the Sharps. The police actually tracked down the previous owner of the car based on the description. Who didn't at first remember who he had sold it to, but they were able to find out it was Cooney.
I don't think any of these people are guilty, but if the cops were interested, then so am I. Again, it's just as important to rule people out as to ruling them in.
Also, on the old forums, people talked about Marde being seen with a guy in an "Army" or "cammo" jacket on the 11th. I haven't come across that specifically that I recall, but people associated that guy with Dee. There is however, a description of two men, one wearing an army coat and a cowboy hat with silver "medallions" (carbuncles). Dee doesn't fit here for me, and he was described as having flaming red hair in his younger days that was "hard to miss".
